Why am I getting an error trying to access Google Scholar?

Answer

When trying to access Google Scholar, you may sometimes run into the following error: "ERROR for site owner: Invalid domain for site key" or "Please show you're not a robot." This can happen when too many people are accessing Google Scholar through our proxy server. There are two ways to bypass this error:

Option 1: Use Google Scholar without our proxy server address

If you experience this error and are off-campus, a possible workaround is to go directly to Google Scholar (i.e., not through our proxy server). This will allow you to search Google Scholar, although you won't see the "Get UIS Full Text" links within Google Scholar using this method.

Option 2: Configure your settings

Link your Google account to Brookens Library, so the “Get UIS Full Text” links will always appear – even if you don’t start your search from our link.

To configure your settings manually, try the following steps:

  1. Go to https://scholar.google.com/
  2. Click the three lines in the top left corner.
  3. Click "Settings".
  4. Click "Library Links".
  5. Search for University of Illinois Springfield. Check the "University of Illinois Springfield - View It @ UIS" box.
  6. Save your settings.

You can now continue to search and should see the Get UIS Full Text links next to articles we have access to.

Unfortunately, this does not always solve the issue. The error issue should resolve itself in a day or two.
